Baand-Kisan (Lady-Farmer) बाँद-किसान

by Nandita Bhatt, Dehradun, 25 Sep 2024

Women of Uttarakhand are the backbone of the state’s economy. They contribute a lot in farming, raising livestock, bringing fodder, managing the household and earning a livelihood for their families. Their workload is increasing because of the high male rural-to-urban migration for education and jobs. In rural Uttarakhand, women are contributing up to 90 percent of the total work in agriculture and animal care.

As per 2011 census, 64% women in Uttarakhand are cultivators and 8.84% considered themselves as agricultural laborers whereas only 28.82% of men identified themselves as cultivators and 11.23% as agricultural laborers.  The participation rate of women in the economy of the state is much higher than several states and also the national average.
